Fungus Rock, also called Mushroom Rock and known to the Maltese as the General's Rock, is a small islet, a 60-metre-high massive lump of limestone at the entrance to an almost circular lagoon at Dwejra on the coast of Gozo, Malta, about 5 km west of Victoria in a straight line. It falls within San Lawrenz. The rock is a landmark of the Dwejra nature reserve, as the Azure Window was before it collapsed in 2017. The Knights Hospitaller found a parasitic plant growing on its flat top, known as the «Maltese fungus», believed to have medicinal properties; they used it to stop bleeding and treat dysentery and gave it as gifts to noblemen. The golden rock, with sheer sides and a flat top, rises from clear blue water at the mouth of a round bay ringed by carved rock cliffs, with an old stone watchtower on the opposite shore. Visitors stand on the coastal rocks at Dwejra to photograph the rock, many dive in the clear water around it, and some walk to the old tower. The rock is protected and may not be climbed, and sunset here is beautiful.
