Furnas is a green valley inside a volcanic caldera on São Miguel in the Azores. It holds a quiet lake ringed by hills and forest, steaming hot springs on its shore, and a small village of white houses and gardens. The village belongs to Povoação municipality and has about 1,400 residents. Hot vapour rises from the valley floor, and locals cook the famous cozido stew in pots buried in the hot ground by the lake for hours. The lake is about 6 km round. The village is home to Terra Nostra Park, one of the oldest and largest gardens in the Azores, with an iron-rich thermal pool. You walk round the lake and among the steam vents on boardwalks, watch the pots being lifted out, then bathe in the warm pool and wander the gardens. The lake is about 30 km in a straight line east of Ponta Delgada. Stay on the paths near the springs, as the water and mud are scalding.
