Yunnan's deepest lake at 155 metres, China's third-deepest freshwater lake and Yunnan's third-largest after Dianchi and Erhai, spreading over 212 square kilometres between mountains about an hour from Kunming, known for its clear blue water. The lake is ringed by beaches, fishing villages and resorts, the best known the Luchong area below a rocky peak on the shore and the Moon Bay wetland park, where sailing boats cruise, and a solar telescope of the Yunnan observatory stands on its bank. Its waters hold fish found nowhere else, the highland climate makes it pleasant most of the year, and it is loveliest at sunset. The lake and many of its beaches are free, the Luchong area costs about CNY 20, some resorts charge 10 to 20 for parking, and buses run from Kunming South coach station to Chengjiang in about an hour and a half, per visitor guides.

Yunnan has a large Hui Muslim community and Chengjiang and Kunming have restaurants under the halal sign, while lakeside restaurants serve lake fish and may serve pork, so ask about ingredients.
