Brunei's best-known food market and a local favourite, an evening market in the Gadong commercial district, where rows of shaded stalls sell freshly made halal local dishes at low prices, filling every evening with families and visitors. Among the best-known dishes is nasi katok, rice with fried chicken and spicy sambal wrapped in paper, along with charcoal-grilled satay, grilled fish and chicken, fried pastries, colourful Malay sweets and fresh tropical juices. The market is an excellent place to try authentic Malay and Bruneian cooking; all the food is halal, and alcohol is not sold in Brunei. People usually buy food to take home, with a few seats nearby. The market opens every evening from about 4 pm until about 10 pm, and entry is free. Paying cash in Brunei dollars is best, and the nicest time to visit is after the sunset prayer.
