Gaiman is a small town in the lower valley of the Chubut river, about 15 kilometres west of Trelew, and the cultural centre of the Welsh settlement in Argentina, known in Welsh as Y Wladfa. It was founded in 1874, the railway arrived in 1908, and its train tunnel was cut in 1914 when the line was extended west. Many in the area still speak Welsh alongside Spanish. Visitors come above all for the Welsh tea houses, which serve tea with spreads of cakes, bread and jams, including the dark Welsh cake rich in dried fruit. The old railway station holds a regional history museum telling the settlers' story, and you can walk through the old train tunnel. Every September the town hosts a youth Eisteddfod, a Welsh cultural festival. Wandering the town is free. It usually pairs with the paleontology museum in Trelew or a trip to Punta Tombo.
