Garanhuns is a city of about 142,000 people in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, some 230 kilometres from Recife, the main town of its area and known for a climate made milder by its height on the plateau, which has made it a summer retreat from the hot North-East. European settlement began in the seventeenth century, when white and Black settlers fled here from Dutch rule and slavery into land home to a branch of the Kariri people, later joined by more escaped slaves in scattered villages. On 29 September 1658 a group of commanders received its land as a grant from the governor of Pernambuco. Every July the city hosts its famous Winter Festival, one of the North-East's largest cultural festivals, with concerts, theatre and arts in its squares. It is also known for the flower clock in its centre, its gardens and its hill-town air.
