The Garganta del Diablo, the Devil's Throat, is a deep narrow canyon in the Huasamayo ravine above Tilcara, known in the past as El Chorro. Earth movements and the Huasamayo river cut it into solid rock, its red walls closing in around the stream, with a small waterfall dropping into a pool at the end. Visitors reach it on foot from town by a path climbing through the mountains, with views over Tilcara and the Quebrada de Humahuaca, or by car to near the entrance and a short walk. At the entrance a small fee is paid, and the path drops into the canyon to the waterfall and pools. The climb is tiring at this altitude, so take it slowly and carry water. Rocks by the water are slippery, and in the summer rainy season the river can rise suddenly, so ask about conditions before going. Payment is cash only.
