A skyscraper shaped like a giant gateway on the west shore of Jinji Lake, 301.8 m tall, built from 2004 and completed in 2016 as the second-tallest building in Suzhou. Its two towers join at the top to form an enormous arch. Its site was chosen to mark precisely where the historic east-west axis running through Suzhou's old town meets the lakeshore, a symbol of the city's gateway into the modern age; it holds offices, apartments and a hotel. Viewing it is free, the best photos come from the lakeside promenade at sunset or at night, when the arch is lit and reflected in the water, and Gate of the Orient station on metro Line 1 is at its foot.
