Genipabu is a complex of huge sand dunes, a freshwater lagoon and an environmental protection area in Extremoz, some twenty kilometres from central Natal, and one of the best-known images of Rio Grande do Norte. Its name comes from Tupi and means river of the jenipapo, a tropical tree. The Genipabu dunes move: strong winds shift the sand constantly, changing the landscape, so only licensed local buggy drivers drive here, offering two rides: gentle, or with thrills, with steep climbs and drops. On the edge of the dunes there are camel rides, giving the place a desert look rare in Brazil. At the lagoon visitors slide down the dunes sitting on wooden boards until they splash into the water, and you can paddle on it. The beach in front is calm and warm. Choose the gentle buggy ride if you have children or older people with you.

Yes, if you choose the gentle ride; the ride with thrills has steep climbs and drops unsuited to children and older people.
