Germia Park is Pristina's green lung, a regional park covering 62 square kilometres of wooded hills north-east of the city, its highest point Butos Peak at 1,050 metres. Part of it was set aside as a «picnic forest» in 1966, and it was placed under protection in 1987. City people come here for fresh air and shade in summer: walking and cycling trails among the oaks, picnic and barbecue spots, and cafés and restaurants near the entrance. Its woods hold dozens of animal species and some 600 kinds of plants, and deeper in there are quiet valleys and streams far from the city's noise. Entry is free, and the park is about a quarter of an hour by car or taxi from central Pristina. Weekday mornings are the best time; summer weekends are busy with families.
