The museum of the writer and artist Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) in his home town of Bsharri, set in the old monastery of Mar Sarkis against a rock face above the town, around a cave where hermits sheltered from the seventh century. Gibran wished the monastery to be his resting place, so his sister Mariana bought it after his death in New York; his body reached Bsharri in August 1931 and lies in the old cave inside the museum. Founded in 1935, the museum holds 440 of Gibran's original paintings and drawings, with the furniture and belongings brought from his New York studio and his manuscripts. Gibran wrote «The Prophet», translated into dozens of languages. A visit takes about an hour, and the museum garden looks over the Qadisha Valley. It combines easily with the Cedars and the valley in a day from Bsharri.
