The Gili island nearest Lombok and the most populated, blending Gili Meno's calm with Trawangan's buzz, with a real local village of mosque, schools and Sasak daily life alongside beachfront hotels and cafes. Its name means water island, as it was the only one of the three with fresh-water wells. It is ringed by white sand beaches and clear water for swimming and snorkelling, with coral reefs and turtles nearby, and you can cycle or walk round it in about an hour and a half. The atmosphere is family-friendly and calm, with varied restaurants, including local halal ones. There is no fee to enter the island; the public boat from Bangsal harbour takes only about ten minutes, and fast boats link it to Bali and the other two islands. It is an excellent place for families to stay, close to Lombok and comfortable. Bring cash, and do not swim far from shore, where currents between the islands can be strong.
