A centre for protecting and breeding the rare Rothschild's giraffe, run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, set up in 1979 when very few of this subspecies remained in Kenya. It has bred them successfully and returned some to protected areas. The highlight is a raised wooden platform at giraffe-head height, where you feed the giraffes pellets by hand as they stretch their long tongues towards you, an experience children and adults love. Guides explain the giraffes' lives and how they are protected, and behind the centre a small forest has a walking trail among trees and birds. Next door is the famous Giraffe Manor hotel, where giraffes poke their heads through the dining-room windows. The centre opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and entry is KES 1,500 per non-resident adult, per visitor guides. Mornings are calmer, before the school groups arrive.
