Gjakova's Old Bazaar, the Çarshia e Madhe or Grand Bazaar, is the oldest bazaar in Kosovo, set in the historic Hadum quarter, which also holds the town's oldest mosque. It was the heart of Gjakova's economy, a trading town that served the surrounding villages and the Gjakova highlands on the border between Kosovo and Albania. The bazaar covers about 35,000 square metres, its main street runs for a kilometre, and it has about 500 shops, along with an active mosque, several türbes and a clock tower destroyed in the First Balkan War and recently rebuilt. It was burned and destroyed during the 1999 war and then rebuilt in its old character, with low wooden shopfronts and a cobbled street. The modern centre is five minutes' walk away across the Islam Bey Bridge, and wandering the bazaar is free. It is a lovely place for coffee and for watching craftsmen at work, halal food is easy to find, and it combines with the Hadum Mosque on a day trip from Peja or Prizren.
