Spegazzini is a glacier flowing from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field into the Spegazzini arm of Lago Argentino, covering 134 square kilometres and about a kilometre and a half wide. Its hallmark is the height of its ice front, up to 135 metres, the tallest in Los Glaciares National Park; it begins in Chile and ends in Argentina. It can only be reached by boat: full-day trips leave Puerto Bandera, forty-five kilometres from El Calafate, sailing among floating icebergs in the North Arm, passing the Upsala glacier and stopping before Spegazzini's towering wall so passengers can take photos and hear the ice crack, with the hanging Seco glacier nearby. Some trips land at a base near the glacier. The trip takes ten to eleven hours and needs no special fitness; the national park entry fee is paid separately.
