The Gokyo Lakes are a chain of turquoise glacial lakes in the Himalaya of northeast Nepal. Clear blue-green water lies between rocky slopes, a broad grey glacier runs beside them, towering white peaks surround them and a small village sits on the shore of the main lake. The lakes lie in Sagarmatha National Park at 4,700 to 5,000 m and are named after the peak of Gokyo Ri. They and their wetlands, covering 7,770 ha, became a Ramsar site in 2007. The main lake, Gokyo Cho, covers 42.9 ha with Gokyo village on its eastern shore, and the largest, Thonak Cho, covers 65 ha and is 62.4 m deep. They are fed by water from the Ngozumpa Glacier. You walk the lakeshores among the peaks, and many visitors climb Gokyo Ri above the village at dawn to see the lakes, the glacier and Everest in the distance. Gokyo village is about 19 km in a straight line north of Namche Bazaar, reached on foot on a trek of several days. The altitude is extreme, so climb slowly with rest days to acclimatise, bring very warm clothes and take a guide.
