A large theme park in the south of Johannesburg, built on an old gold mine that closed in 1971 and designed like a town in the gold rush that began in 1886 and created Johannesburg itself, with old-style streets and wooden facades. The park has fast roller coasters, water rides and spinning rides, including the inverted Anaconda coaster, gentler rides for small children and dance shows. It is one of the region's most popular family outings, busiest in school holidays and at weekends. The highlight for history lovers is the tour down into the old mine, where visitors see a gold-bearing reef in the rock, followed by a gold-pouring demonstration and the story of the miners who built the city's wealth. The ticket covers the rides, the mine tour is priced separately, and prices change, so check the official site. The Apartheid Museum is next door, so both fit into one day.
