Golden Beach is a long sandy beach on the Karpas peninsula, the long, narrow finger at the north-eastern tip of Cyprus. With its wide dunes and clear water it is one of the most beautiful and least developed beaches on the island. The Karpas peninsula is one of Cyprus's most striking features; its far end is Cape Apostolos Andreas, and its largest town is Rizokarpaso. Legend says Teucer, founder of Salamis, first landed on a beach in this area. It is thinly populated, wild donkeys live here, and sea turtles nest on its beaches in summer. You see soft golden sand running for kilometres, dunes covered in green shrubs, and clear turquoise water with light white waves. From the hills above, the beach curves away to the horizon between the sea and the dunes. It is about 16 km from Rizokarpaso in a straight line. Services are few, so bring water and food. Visitors from the south cross at the checkpoints with a passport, and the Republic of Cyprus treats entry through the north's airport as illegal entry.
