Entry is only **about โฌ4**. โ **Directly on the main road** between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia (about 20 km) โ barely a detour, and the turning is clearly marked. โ **Completely exposed, with no tree, no shade and no water** โ do not visit between 10 and 5 in July or August; early morning only. โ **The ground is uneven stone and the streets are paved in slippery old stone**, on a slope โ closed shoes, and **not wheelchair-accessible**. โ **Explanation is very sparse** โ no guided route and not enough panels; read about the site before going in, or you will see meaningless foundations. โ **No facilities at all**: no cafรฉ and no toilets โ arrange that before arriving. โ **Its hours are limited** and it may close in the afternoon โ check. โ **Nearly empty of visitors** even at peak. Allow **45 minutes**.
**A complete Minoan town, not a palace** โ and that is exactly what makes it different from Knossos and Phaistos. Knossos is a palace: a vast administrative and religious centre that tells you how the **elite** lived. Gournia is **an ordinary Bronze Age town**, excavated almost in its entirety, and you walk through it on **real streets**: narrow paved lanes climbing between **houses** with thresholds, rooms, staircases and workshops. **Craftsmen's tools** were found here โ carpenters', smiths', potters' and fishermen's โ so it is understood to have been a **town of workers and artisans** rather than a court centre. At its top is a larger building sometimes called the ยซlittle palaceยป, with a **public square** in front of it, probably the gathering place. โ Be realistic: **what survives are knee-high walls** rather than standing buildings, and **there is very little explanation**. โ But it is **cheap, nearly empty and directly on the road** โ and it shows you what Knossos cannot: how ordinary people lived.

**Because they answer two entirely different questions.** โ **Knossos answers**: what did Minoan power look like? A vast palace, courts, storage magazines, frescoes, grand staircases, an administrative system โ it is **a state centre**. Magnificent, but it tells you about **a very small elite**. โ **Gournia answers**: how did **everyone else** live? Here you walk a narrow paved street, stand at **a house threshold**, see a room the size of a room, a stair up to a first floor that no longer exists, and a workshop where a carpenter's tools were found. **That is genuinely rare** โ most Bronze Age sites in the world are palaces and temples, because those were built most solidly; **a fully excavated town** is uncommon. โ **The price you pay**: nothing visually impressive, and no explanation. โ **The advice**: see Knossos first (for the big picture), then Gournia (for daily life) โ in that order the picture completes itself.
**Learn three things before you go in and the site transforms.** โ **First: the streets.** Notice that they are **paved, sloping and very narrow** โ too narrow for a cart, so transport was on backs or animals. And they all climb towards the large building at the top โ which is **deliberate planning**, not accident. โ **Second: the thresholds.** Look for a smooth **threshold stone** at gaps in the walls โ those are house doors, and they are the clearest proof that you are in a residential street rather than inside one building. โ **Third: the differences in size.** Most units are small and similar (houses), and one at the top is much larger with a square in front (administration or assembly). โ **What you will not see**: roofs or upper floors โ they were **timber and mud** and have all gone; so what you see is **the ground floor only** of a town that stood considerably taller.
