A long, modern riverside promenade on the west bank of the Magdalena, Colombia's longest river, near its mouth on the Caribbean. Built in stages in recent years, it reconnected the city with its river after decades of turning its back on it, and is now Barranquilla's favourite place for a stroll. The walk runs for kilometres among gardens, plazas, sports courts and open-air stages, with food kiosks serving Caribbean-coast dishes: fried fish with coconut rice, «arepa de huevo» and tropical fruit juices. From it you see ships on the river and the big Pumarejo bridge with its white towers. The best time is evening, when the heat eases and a river breeze blows, the plazas fill with families, joggers and music, and the sun sets over the wide water. Statues and landmarks along it celebrate the city's culture and its famous carnival. It is hot and humid by day, so evening suits best. The area is safe, busy and patrolled, but watch your belongings.
