A wide bay on the north coast of Mauritius and the island's liveliest area, with calm clear water, a public beach and a main street busy with restaurants, cafés, shops and malls. A coral reef shelters the bay from the ocean swell, so its water suits swimming, paddling and boating, and catamarans and glass-bottom boats set off from here for the small northern islands: Coin de Mire with its rocky cliff, Flat Island, and Gabriel Island with its white beaches. Grand Baie is also the base for diving, deep-sea fishing and helmet undersea walks. In the evening the restaurants and cafés around the bay come alive. The public beach is free, and boat trips are priced with the operators. The area makes a family-friendly base for exploring the north of the island.
