The Grand Mosque of Niamey is the largest mosque in Niger's capital, on Islam Avenue. It is known for its green dome and tall minaret with 171 steps, which gives a wide view over the city. Friday and Eid prayers are held here, often attended by the country's leading figures. It is a Sunni mosque built in the 1970s with Libyan funding. A broad wooded garden, known as the Grand Mosque park, surrounds it. Niamey, the capital on the Niger River, is the country's largest city, mostly made up of low houses and wide streets. You see a long white building with rows of arches framed in blue, geometric patterns on the walls and a green dome on top. The minaret rises over the district, and from the top the view runs over broad streets, trees and sand-coloured houses to the horizon. Wide squares surround the mosque. It is about 2 km from central Niamey in a straight line. Non-Muslims usually view it from outside, and climbing the minaret is sometimes allowed, so ask the keepers. Dress modestly. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to Niger, so read the current advice before any planning.
