The Reformed Great Church of Debrecen is a Protestant church in the centre of Debrecen in eastern Hungary, between Kossuth Square and Kálvin Square. It is an icon of Hungarian Protestantism and earned the city the nickname «the Calvinist Rome». With a floor area of 1,500 square metres it is the largest Protestant church building in Hungary, and it holds the largest bell of any Hungarian Protestant church. It was built between 1805 and 1824 in the Neoclassical style, after the previous church burned in a great fire in 1802. Mihály Péchy designed it, though the plans changed several times during construction. The broad yellow facade, with tall white columns and a classical pediment, stands between two matching towers topped with dark green domes. Before it spreads the wide paved Kossuth Square with its fountain, trams run past, and in the evening the facade glows warm yellow. You can climb one of the towers for a view over the city. The square in front is the heart of Debrecen, lined with cafés.
