Grindelwald is Switzerland's most famous mountain village and the base for exploring the Jungfrau region: a broad town in an open green valley directly at the foot of the **north face of the Eiger** — the most famous and most dangerous rock wall in mountaineering history, rising 1,800 metres above the meadows and dominating every view in the village. The region's best-known trips branch from here: the Jungfraujoch train via Kleine Scheidegg, the modern **Eiger Express** cable car (2020) that cuts the ascent to 15 minutes, and the First mountain with its famous attractions — the Cliff Walk bolted to the rock face, the mountain cart and trottibike runs, the zip-line, and Lake Bachalp. In winter, a major ski area. It has the most services in the region (hotels, restaurants, shops, transport) and equally the most crowds. For families wanting a comfortable mountain base with every activity within reach: Grindelwald is the Oberland's first choice.

**First**, without question: ride the cable car up, walk the bolted Cliff Walk (free with the cable-car ticket) with its astonishing view, then descend by three successive fun rides — the First Flyer zip-line, the mountain carts and the trottibikes. It fills half a day. Mind the minimums: the First Flyer needs 35–125 kg and 130 cm, the mountain cart 135 cm and the trottibike 125 cm — roughly age nine or ten and up. Younger children still enjoy the cable car, the Cliff Walk and the easy hour's walk to Lake Bachalp if the weather is clear.
