**A sea cave whose water glows emerald green from light entering through an opening below the surface** โ between Amalfi and Positano. โ **The light is everything**: **it does not enter through the cave mouth but through a submerged opening below sea level** โ โ **so it passes through water first**, **and water absorbs red and transmits green and blue** โ **lighting the cave from beneath in emerald**. โ **The cave was once dry** โ **and the sea flooded it** when the land subsided; โ **which is why it holds stalactites and stalagmites underwater**, **and those cannot form underwater at all** โ **the proof that it was once land**. โ **The visit is very short** โ a rowing-boat circuit inside the cave. โ **And it is cancelled in swell.**

**The difference is the depth of the opening and the light's path โ not the water itself.** โ **The shared principle**: **in both caves the light does not enter by the mouth but through an opening below sea level** โ **so it passes through water before reaching the cave**. โ **And water is a colour filter**: **it absorbs red and orange first** (longer wavelengths), **and transmits blue and green** โ **so the light arriving is filtered**. โ **The difference between the two is distance and depth**: โ **Capri's opening is deeper and the light's path through water longer** โ **so the green is largely absorbed too and only blue survives**; โ **giving that luminous indigo**. โ **The Emerald Grotto's opening is shallower and the path shorter** โ **so green survives alongside blue**; โ **giving emerald**. โ **What it means practically**: **both depend on a high sun and a calm sea** โ โ **and both are cancelled in swell**; โ **the Blue Grotto is more spectacular and more famous**, โ **but more crowded, dearer and with longer queues**. โ **And do not visit both expecting two different experiences** โ the second will seem lesser.
