**A sea cave whose water glows emerald green from light entering through an opening below the surface** — between Amalfi and Positano. ⚠ **The light is everything**: **it does not enter through the cave mouth but through a submerged opening below sea level** — ⚠ **so it passes through water first**, **and water absorbs red and transmits green and blue** — **lighting the cave from beneath in emerald**. ✅ **The cave was once dry** — **and the sea flooded it** when the land subsided; ⚠ **which is why it holds stalactites and stalagmites underwater**, **and those cannot form underwater at all** — **the proof that it was once land**. ⚠ **The visit is very short** — a rowing-boat circuit inside the cave. ⚠ **And it is cancelled in swell.**

**The difference is the depth of the opening and the light's path — not the water itself.** ✅ **The shared principle**: **in both caves the light does not enter by the mouth but through an opening below sea level** — **so it passes through water before reaching the cave**. ⚠ **And water is a colour filter**: **it absorbs red and orange first** (longer wavelengths), **and transmits blue and green** — **so the light arriving is filtered**. ✅ **The difference between the two is distance and depth**: ⚠ **Capri's opening is deeper and the light's path through water longer** — **so the green is largely absorbed too and only blue survives**; ✅ **giving that luminous indigo**. ⚠ **The Emerald Grotto's opening is shallower and the path shorter** — **so green survives alongside blue**; ✅ **giving emerald**. ✅ **What it means practically**: **both depend on a high sun and a calm sea** — ⚠ **and both are cancelled in swell**; ✅ **the Blue Grotto is more spectacular and more famous**, ⚠ **but more crowded, dearer and with longer queues**. ⚠ **And do not visit both expecting two different experiences** — the second will seem lesser.
