The Gruna do Brejo, formerly the Garimpo Verruga or Mina do Brejo, is a man-made cave in Andaraí near the village of Igatu in the Chapada Diamantina, refitted to receive the tourists who visit Igatu. The cave is an old diamond working where many of the miners who dug its tunnels in search of the precious stone are said to have lost their lives; carved figures of these adventurers now commemorate them. A natural pool lies at the entrance. In 2008 two new species of harvestmen were recorded here, with features close to cave animals, such as lost pigmentation and long limbs. The cave is part of the tour of the Igatu ruins, a village that boomed in the diamond-mining era and left abandoned stone houses among the rocks. The visit is short but reveals the harshness of the miners' lives; combine it with a walk among the village's stone houses.
