Maquiné Cave is one of the oldest and most visited show caves in Brazil, about 5 km from the town of Cordisburgo and 143 km north-west of Belo Horizonte. The Danish naturalist Peter Lund studied fossil mammals here from 1834, and it was the first Brazilian cave prepared for tourism. About 650 metres of passages are open, through seven chambers linked by short corridors, on nearly level ground (no more than 18 metres of height difference), with lighting, walkways and handrails. The chambers are decorated with varied limestone formations, among them the well-known Throne Room and Fairies' Room, and the temperature stays at 26-27 °C. Visits are guided by local guides in small groups, roughly every hour, and last about an hour. It opens daily 8:00-16:30, and tickets are R$20, R$10 for seniors, children and students.
