Helmet and torch.
Gruta do Limoeiro, in Castelo in the heart of Espírito Santo, on the ES-166 between Castelo and Venda Nova do Imigrante, is one of the most important show caves in Brazil, and over the years travellers, scientists, politicians and poets have written about it. Its visitor centre welcomes tourists who explore its dark passages in helmets and with torches, in groups of up to fifteen led by guides from a local association based in the Limoeiro district itself. The cave entrance is a short walk of about 150 metres from the visitor centre, and the tour takes about an hour. The cave opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 16:00. Individual visitors need no booking and are taken in order of arrival, while groups arrange in advance; the ticket includes safety gear and a torch. Combine the visit with a drive through the rural hills of Castelo and Venda Nova.
