Tolantongo is a natural resort in a deep mountain canyon in Hidalgo, where a river of warm, blue-green water runs. Caves and a tunnel in the canyon walls pour hot water, small waterfalls spill down, and terraced pools on the hillside look out over the mountains. The water runs warm because it comes from hot springs inside the mountain. The entry ticket covers the caves, tunnel, river, pools, suspension bridge and waterfalls. Press reports for 2025 gave general admission as 230 pesos per person, with children up to four free. A ticket is valid for one day, and overnight guests pay again for each extra day. You swim in the river, step into the cave where warm water rains from the ceiling, and soak in the terraced pools. There are simple hotels, campsites and restaurants on site. It is about 29 km in a straight line northeast of Ixmiquilpan, and the last stretch of road is steep and winding. Bring cash, as payment is cash only, and avoid weekends and holidays, when it is very crowded.
