A Ming-dynasty wooden tower standing at the exact centre of Liaocheng's old town, built under the Hongwu Emperor; tradition says it was raised from timber left over when the city wall was rebuilt in brick from 1372, so it was first called the «Leftover-Timber Tower» and used as a lookout, before taking its present name in 1496. With its base the tower rises 33.38 metres, with four tiers of curved eaves under a roof of crossing ridges; it has been a protected national monument since 1988, and the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors both climbed it. From the top you see the old town ringed by Dongchang Lake, like an island on the water. Tickets cost about CNY 30, half price for students, and it is open from 8 am to 6 pm in summer and until 5 pm in winter, per visitor guides.
