A national forest park in Benxi Manchu Autonomous County, about 48 km from the city, its name meaning «gate mountain» because two facing peaks, one broad and one narrow, look like a gateway; its fine peaks earn it the nickname «Huangshan of the north-east». In autumn it is famed for maple leaves that paint the slopes red, orange and gold, one of the best-known places in China to see autumn colour, with old trees, streams and a small lake mirroring the mountains, and walking paths run along the valley. Tickets cost CNY 90, open from 8.30 am to 4 pm, per visitor guides; it is best from mid-September to mid-October, with peak colour usually in the first week of October, when it is very busy.
