Guaramiranga is one of the smallest towns in Ceará, with about five thousand people at 865 metres in the Serra de Baturité hills, some 110 kilometres from Fortaleza, and is nicknamed the «Switzerland of the North-East» for its relatively cool climate and greenery. Temperatures range between 15 and 23 degrees all year, rare in the hot North-East, so people from Fortaleza come up to escape the heat. Its lands hold the Pico Alto, the highest point in Ceará, climbed for views over the mountains and plains. The town hosts a jazz and blues festival every year at Carnival and a flower fair in November, and has an aviation museum with a military training jet at its entrance. Pousadas and restaurants are scattered among the mountain forest and coffee farms.
