Guaraqueçaba is a small town at the far east of Paraná, on the São Paulo border, with about 7,400 people, looking over a wide bay ringed by well-preserved Atlantic forest, and one of the oldest Portuguese settlements in the state. In 1545 a Spanish expedition put in near Superagüi Island after a storm and found two Portuguese men living peacefully with the Indigenous people; among the crew was the German adventurer Hans Staden, who later wrote about his travels and captivity in Brazil. The town still has well-kept historic buildings. Its sights include Ponta do Morretes, an extension of a town-centre square out over the sea, good for sunsets and sometimes dolphins. A trail climbs Morro do Quitumbê for the view, boats leave for Superagüi Island, and farther out lies the Salto Morato reserve with its waterfall.
