Guaratuba is a city on the Paraná coast, one of the oldest in the state and one of its main holiday destinations, with about 22 kilometres of beaches between the sea, the mountains and the wide Guaratuba Bay. Its Tupi name means «many guarás», after the scarlet ibises with red plumage that live in the bay and have become the city's emblem. The Carijó people lived here when Europeans arrived, and a town was founded in 1765 on the orders of the provincial governor, as part of Portugal's plan to settle the southern coast. Today it lives from tourism, fishing, shrimp and banana growing, being the state's largest banana producer. Visitors come in summer for its beaches and bay viewpoints, and a car ferry links it to Matinhos across the bay's mouth.
