Gubbio is a medieval town in the northeast of the province of Perugia in Umbria, central Italy, on the lowest slope of Monte Ingino, about 31 km northeast of Perugia and 32 km north of Assisi in a straight line. The municipality has about 30,000 residents. In Roman times the town was called Iguvium, and coins from the ancient Umbrian period carry the name of its people. People have lived in the Gubbio valley since the Middle Palaeolithic, and in the Bronze Age the summit of Monte Ingino was a site of communal ritual. Its best-known building is the Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli, built between 1332 and 1349 on a huge platform against the hillside. The town climbs the mountainside with houses and palaces of pale grey stone and narrow cobbled lanes running along the slope. The Palazzo dei Consoli rises with its tower and battlements above the hanging square, seeming to guard the town from the plain below, with the green mountain behind. Visitors wander the stone lanes up to the palace square overlooking the plain, and some ride the open cable car to the top of Monte Ingino for a wide view. Remains of a Roman theatre lie at the foot of the town, and it makes a good day trip from Assisi or Perugia.
