A huge monument on the edge of a cliff above the Devil's Valley in the Caucasus, on the Georgian Military Road between the Gudauri resort and the Jvari pass. It is one of the best-known stops on the road to Kazbegi, often simply called the Gudauri panoramic viewpoint. It was built in 1983 for the bicentenary of the Treaty of Georgievsk, signed in 1783 between the Georgian Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti and the Russian Empire. It is a large curved structure of stone and concrete whose inner wall carries a colourful tile mural running its whole length, depicting scenes from Georgian and Russian history. From its edge there is a majestic view over the deep valley and the mountains, green or snowy depending on the season. Paragliding flights take off nearby, and small stalls sell food and souvenirs at the car park. Visiting is free and always open. Mornings and the hour before sunset are best, when the air is clear; it is usually windy and cold, so bring a jacket. Most visitors stop here on the way between Tbilisi and Kazbegi.
