One of Georgia's leading ski resorts, on a south-facing plateau in the Greater Caucasus at about 2,200 metres, near the Jvari pass on the Georgian Military Road, some 120 kilometres north of Tbilisi. Its slopes lie above the tree line and are considered avalanche-safe by the resort. The resort has more than seventy-six kilometres of runs and more than a dozen lifts, the lowest starting at about 1,990 metres and the highest reaching about 3,280 metres, with gentle slopes for beginners and families and long runs for experts. The ski season usually runs from December to April. Gudauri is also known for heliskiing on distant peaks and for paragliding over the valleys, which continues summer and winter. In summer its meadows become a place for hiking and mountain biking on the way to Kazbegi. The village itself is free, while lifts, equipment, lessons and paragliding are priced by the resort and operators and vary by season. New Year weeks are very busy, so book early, and the road from Tbilisi may close briefly after snowstorms.
