Gudhjem is a small town and fishing port on the northern coast of the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, home to 725 people. Tourists come for its steep, picturesque streets, views and atmosphere, about 21 km in a straight line from Rønne. Smoked herring was first prepared in Gudhjem, in its traditional smokehouses, and has been sent to Copenhagen since the 1840s. Its harbour was built in the mid-19th century, destroyed by a storm in 1872 and rebuilt in 1889, and a ferry to the island of Christiansø has sailed from here since 1684. On the hill above town stands Gudhjem Mølle, Denmark's largest windmill, built in 1893. Houses with red tiled roofs and yellow and white walls tumble down the hillside to the harbour, where fishing boats and yachts moor. Pink granite rocks line the shore, and sheep graze the hills above the blue sea. Try the smoked fish at one of the town's smokehouses. The streets are very steep, so take them slowly.
