The Roman theatre of Guelma is an ancient theatre in the centre of Guelma, capital of Guelma Province in northeast Algeria, about 57 km southwest of Annaba and 74 km east of Constantine in a straight line. The town lies about 52 km from the Mediterranean coast. Guelma stands on the site of the Roman city of Calama in Numidia, founded earlier by the Phoenicians as Malaca. The area has been inhabited since prehistory, as the Roknia remains with more than 3,000 dolmens show. The Roman theatre was restored in 1905. The theatre's semicircular stone tiers rise around the stage, backed by the stage wall with its columns and arches, with the modern town's buildings all around. The theatre also houses a small museum of archaeological finds from the area. Visitors walk the tiers, stand on the stage and look out over the town from the top. The visit is short, about an hour, and makes a good stop between Constantine and Annaba.
