Güirá Oga, «house of the birds» in Guaraní, is a centre for rescuing, rehabilitating and breeding wild animals, in thick forest on the road to the Iguazú Falls. The site was declared a protected landscape on 27 November 1997, named after the naturalist Andrés Giai, over about 20 hectares of Paraná rainforest. The centre takes in animals that are injured or seized from illegal trade, treats them, releases those it can, and keeps those that could not survive on their own. Visits are guided by an environmental educator along forest paths, where you see colourful birds such as toucans and parrots, monkeys and other forest animals, and hear their stories. The visit takes about an hour and a half, and the centre opens daily from 09:30 to 18:00, with the last tour at 16:30. It makes a good half day before or after the falls.
