A green hill area about 13 km west of Xiangyang, where Zhuge Liang, the most famous strategist of the Three Kingdoms era, lived in seclusion for more than ten years. Liu Bei came here three times to seek him out, and on the third visit Zhuge Liang received him and laid out the strategy known as the «Longzhong Plan». The story gave Chinese the idiom «three visits to the thatched cottage», for repeatedly courting someone for high office. Since the Ming, «ten views» have been marked here, among them the cottage pavilion, the field Zhuge Liang farmed, the Hall of the Three Visits, a small bridge, a well and a memorial hall, set among woods, ponds and paths. Tickets cost CNY 87 including the shuttle bus, open from 8 am to 5.30 pm from March to November and 8.30 am to 5 pm in winter, per visitor guides.
