Gutenberg Castle is Liechtenstein's second preserved castle โ and the only one whose grounds you can **actually enter**, unlike the closed Vaduz Castle: a twelfth-century fortress crowning a lone rocky hill (70 metres) in the middle of Balzers village at the country's southern end, ringed by walls, gardens and terraces. The castle was abandoned for centuries and fell into ruin, then rebuilt by an Austrian doctor at the start of the twentieth century, and bought by the state in 1979 โ today the principality owns it and uses it for cultural events, summer concerts and weddings, with its grounds, gardens and courtyard open to the public free by day (the interior buildings are for events only). Its hill has been inhabited since the Neolithic, and a hoard of Roman bronze statuettes was found there (displayed in the National Museum). About 15 minutes from Vaduz by car or bus โ the best short trip from the capital, and its view over the Rhine valley is superb.
