A classical Chinese garden in the town of Nanxiang in Jiading, about 21 km from central Shanghai, counted among the city's five great classical gardens and laid out in the Jiangnan style of the gardens south of the Yangtze. It was created by the magistrate Min Shiji in the 16th-century Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty, passed through many hands and was remodelled in 1746; it is known for the bamboo groves around its lotus ponds, pavilions, covered walkways and stone bridges. Tickets cost CNY 12, and the south gate opens from 7 am to 6.30 pm from March to November, per visitor guides. Nanxiang is the home of the famous xiaolongbao soup dumplings, usually filled with pork, so ask for vegetable or fish versions.
