Allow **two hours**.
**Ancient Sparta's port, and today the gateway to the Mani** โ a seaside town whose front of coloured neoclassical houses reflects in the water. In antiquity it was **the port of Sparta**, which had no coast of its own โ so what naval power Sparta had, limited as it was, went out from here. Today it is a fishing town and a crossing point: a long row of **three-storey houses** in ochre and crimson along the quay, fish tavernas, and boats moored directly in front of them. Off the front is a small island called **Kranai**, reached by a **short causeway**, with a 19th-century stone **lighthouse** and the **Tzanetakis tower**, now the Museum of the Mani. Legend has **Paris and Helen** spend their first night on this island after fleeing Sparta โ meaning, in the story, that **the Trojan War began here**. โ There is a seasonal **ferry to Crete** (Kissamos).

**Legendary rather than archaeological โ and the distinction matters.** โ **The story**: Greek myth has **Paris**, son of the king of Troy, abduct (or persuade to flee) **Helen**, wife of **Menelaus**, king of Sparta. They fled Sparta towards the sea and **spent their first night together on the islet of Kranai** here before sailing for Troy. From that flight came **the Trojan War**. โ **Why Kranai makes sense**: Sparta is inland with no coast, **and its nearest port is Gytheio** โ so any sea escape from Sparta necessarily passes here, and the islet was a natural place to shelter overnight. โ **What is established and what is not**: **the islet is real**, **Gytheio really was Sparta's port**, and **Troy is a real site** in Turkey. โ **The story itself, though, is literature rather than history** โ there is no archaeological evidence for it, and the Iliad is poetry written down centuries later. โ **As a visitor**: take it as a fine literary layer that lets a short causeway to a small island carry three thousand years of story.
**An excellent stop, and a reasonable base for exploring the Mani.** โ **As a stop**: its position is very practical โ at the **crossroads** between Mystras/Sparta to the north, the Mani to the south and Monemvasia to the east. So a **lunch and a two-hour walk** here is the obvious move on any day of moving around Laconia. โ **As a base**: reasonable if your aim is **the Mani**: cheaper and with more choice than the tower villages, with cash machines, pharmacies, supermarkets and long **Mavrovouni beach** 3 km away, and you can drive south each day. โ **But it is not as beautiful as Monemvasia** nor as quiet as the Mani villages โ it is a working town with traffic along the front. โ **And it is not a base for Mystras** โ modern Sparti is closer and better for that. โ **The rule**: exploring the Mani โ Gytheio or Areopoli. Wanting a beautiful night โ Monemvasia. Visiting Mystras โ Sparti.
