The island's main museum, founded in 1984 and reopened in its present building in the Hainan Cultural Park on 15 November 2008, beside the provincial library and the performing arts centre; it holds more than 20,000 items. Its permanent galleries tell the history of Hainan from prehistoric times and the life of the minorities who live on the island, above all the Li people, famous for the patterned textiles whose techniques are counted as intangible heritage, alongside a hall of folk traditions and crafts. The building is spacious and air-conditioned, a good refuge from the heat or the rain; it offers audio guides in several languages including English, and it lies about two kilometres from the Temple of the Five Lords, so the two fit into half a day. Entry is free on showing a passport; it opens from 9:00 to 17:00 and closes on Mondays, with a limited number of tickets each day, per visitor guides.
