The most popular beach on Jeju: soft white sand and shallow, clear water shading to turquoise, which has earned it the nickname «Korea's Maldives». On its own it takes more than half of all visitors to the island's beaches in summer, and it is close to Jeju City and the airport, so it suits a half day at the start or end of a trip. The beach is two crescents of sand separated by black basalt rocks, crossed by a small arched bridge. The water stays shallow a long way out and the slope is gentle, so it is good for children. At its eastern end is Seoubong, a small extinct volcano with a short trail up through fields that bloom yellow in spring, and a summit view over the whole beach. Around the beach are many cafés and bakeries with glass fronts facing the sea, and shops renting paddleboards and clear-bottomed kayaks. The lifeguarded swimming season is July and August. The beach is free and always open. It gets very busy in summer and at weekends, so come in the morning.
