Hamilton Gardens is a public park in the south of Hamilton, in New Zealand's North Island, on the banks of the Waikato River. It covers 54 hectares and is the Waikato region's most visited attraction, drawing more than a million people a year. It holds 28 enclosed gardens, each showing the art, way of life or historical garden style of a civilisation, grouped into collections such as the Paradise, Productive and Fantasy gardens. Work began in the early 1960s on what was then the city's rubbish tip, and the park also has a lake and open lawns. You see an Egyptian garden with a long pool framed by columns, a Japanese garden with a calm pond, rocks and maples, and a Chinese garden with a white stone bridge arching over the water. In the English garden brick paths run between bright flower beds, and a round pond lies before an old white house. It is about 3 km from central Hamilton in a straight line. The main gardens are free to enter.
