The Felsenweg

If you have one mountain day from Lucerne, **Pilatus or Rigi** give the bigger, more famous view. But Bürgenstock is far cheaper, much less crowded and needs no expensive summit ticket, and the free Felsenweg alone justifies the trip. Choose it if you want easy walking on a lake-edge cliff rather than a high summit, or if the weather is unsettled — at 1,130 metres you are below the cloud line rather than in it.
The car is open on three sides behind glass and metal mesh, the ride lasts under a minute, and the drop beneath you is direct and very visible. Anyone with a real fear of heights will find it unpleasant — the answer is to walk the Felsenweg and take the ordinary footpath up to the summit instead (slower, but free and far calmer). Children usually enjoy it more than their parents do.

On **Bürgenstock**, the ridge above Lake Lucerne, is something Europe has no equal to: an open-air lift bolted to a vertical rock face that carries you **153 metres** in under a minute and steps out of the cliff onto the Hammetschwand summit at about 1,130 metres. It was built by two Swiss businessmen, Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer, and opened in **1905** to serve their hotel guests — and it is still **the highest outdoor lift in Europe**. The real pleasure is not the minute inside the lift but the way there: the **Felsenweg**, a path cut into the rock face that curls directly above the lake, wide, safe and free, taking about forty-five minutes on foot from the Bürgenstock hotel to the lift's base. You walk with hundreds of metres of air and blue water beneath you — one of the loveliest half-hours of walking in all Switzerland, with almost no climbing. From the top the lake unfolds with all its crooked arms, and Pilatus, Rigi and the distant Alpine chain sit in a single view. Getting there from Lucerne is an outing in itself: a boat to **Kehrsiten** (about twenty-five minutes), then a funicular up to the Bürgenstock plateau, then the walk. Allow a full half-day.
