A Buddhist temple at Fengqiao, «Maple Bridge», about five kilometres west of Suzhou's old city. By tradition it was founded in the Tianjian era, between 502 and 519, and it takes its name from Hanshan, the monk-poet said to have lived here under the Tang. The temple is famous throughout East Asia for the poem «A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge» by the Tang poet Zhang Ji, which describes a sad traveller moored by the bridge at night, hearing the temple bells at midnight. The stone Maple Bridge and the old canal are still beside it; visitors are asked to keep quiet and respect worshippers. Tickets cost CNY 20, 30 in spring and autumn, and it is open from 7.30 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides.
