A memorial in northern Dresden, one of the small monuments scattered through the city's outer districts that rarely reach a visitor guide. Its value lies in context more than in itself. Dresden is a city the world knows from six buildings in its centre, but its municipal area is wide and contains dozens of districts and villages absorbed by the city over a century, each with its own monuments, cemeteries and local memory. This monument is of that kind: raised for a local figure or a local event, known to the residents of the district and to nobody else. That layer of urban memory exists in every European city, and it is what remains after tourism turns its attention to the frontage. A plain practical point: this is not a sight and is not worth going to for its own sake. It is listed because it is in the record and for anyone living in or walking through northern Dresden. The historic centre: the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche, the Green Vault, the Semper Opera and the Brühl Terrace, all within ten minutes' walk of each other. Then the northern bank for the city's everyday life. Two days cover the city well, and three allow a trip to nearby Saxon Switzerland.
